Greetings to all… It’s David Davis with my weekly blog: Death of Wrestling. For all of those who read this regularly, you will know that this is not a blog about bashing wrestling; it’s a blog of a frustrated fan, who loves the business and wishes that each week it could be a little better.
Yo, yo, yo people. It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post; mainly due to the fact that my daughter was born and I gave myself a little bit of paternity leave… But there has been so much I could have spoken about in that time… Great and weird booking involving the Shield, Austin Aries, Daniel Bryan, Ryback and of course Zeb Colter’s alliance with Antonio Cesaro. It’s not non-American’s he hates; just non-White people…
But my short blog back this week is just focusing on Christian’s return. Now Christian has been one of my favourites for a long time. I have to admit that during the Edge & Christian era I was a firm Edge head, but from the day they split, Christian did some amazing work and definitely got me, and most of the WWE Universe, on his side.
Unfortunately for Christian, Vince McMahon has never really seen him as a main-eventer, regardless of how hard the WWE Universe chants for him. In fact, Christian took his ball and went home, well to TNA and became the main event star that he should. Once again, unfortunately for Christian, only a handful of people watch TNA (comparatively speaking) and so he came back… home.
Of course, nothing much changed for him once he came back… He got a bit of a push and when Edge retired he enjoyed a bigger push and some great matches with Randy Orton. But injury prevailed and Christian was put on the shelf for what seemed like an eternity…
Now I’ve written quite a few blogs about the lack of depth in the roster, and the problems this can cause when people get injured etc. So surely, when the WWE has a star like Christian ready and waiting to come back they’d do something brilliant with him. Insert him in to a feud with some vigour; get us all excited and give us something to talk about…
But Christian didn’t return with a bang; it was more like a whimper. For the record, I don’t think that a feud with the Shield is a whimper, but it’s the way it was initiated – weird tag matches with Sheamus that just seem to happen to involve the Shield by chance, rather than design.
In my eyes, Christian is a star that should be pushed as a star. Look at the way they pushed the feud between Fandango and Y2J. They see Y2J as a star and give his feuds, regardless of who they are with, star power. Christian on the other hand was given a mid-card return with a feud that seems like nothing more than a mid-card feud.
I think wrestling companies really need to start listening to their audience and pushing people that the fans want to be pushed. People like Zack Ryder, Antonio Cesaro and Christian. It’s a dangerous game because sometimes when they give us what we want, it turns out it’s not what we really wanted… But if they don’t listen to us at all then it’s the DoW…
